Justified by works?

James 2:24 NASB You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone.

? Is this a contradiction of what Paul wrote in Ephesians 2:9 ...not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.??

How can this be?

Or just a tough translation?

24 You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone. [NIV]

Is it not evident that a person is made right with God not by a barren faith but by faith fruitful in works? [Message]

24 So you see, we are shown to be right with God by what we do, not by faith alone. [NLT]

24You can now see that we please God by what we do and not only by what we believe. [CEV]

But, I'll guess you knew that already. Maybe we should read the whole passage (even in NASB) to detrmine if that is really what the author intedned to say. Again, I'll bet you already have an answer for this.

Nice try,
Mike

not by the faith that says I belive and has no action to verify it or validate it.

okay you say, then what about the thief on the cross? No time to validate it? How about the faith to change his tune, to cease the railings and ask for help publicly and apart from simply praying quietly?

Try these translations:
faith with no works is dead.
or faith with no works is hollow. or faith without worsk is an oxymoron.

I choose to side with the CEV here since it validates my theological position. ;)
